Que 1: Explain the location of India.

  1. India is located on the north eastern hemisphere.
  2. It lies near to the equator.
  3. Its latitudinal extension is 8 degree 4’ N to 37 degree 6’ N
  4. Its longitudinal extension is 68 degree 7’ E to 97 degree 25’ E
  5. Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle of India.
  6. The north to south distance of mainland India is 3214 km.
  7. The west to east distance of mainland India is 2933 km.
  8. Towards the southeast of mainland is Andaman Nicobar island which lies in Bay of Bengal.
  9. Towards the southeast of mainland is Lakshadweep island which lies in Arabian Sea.
Que 2: Explain the size of India.

  1. The land mass of India has an area of 3.28 million square km.

  5. The total length of the coastline of the mainland, including Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep,is 7,516.6 km.
Que 3: The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the west but the watches show the same time. How does this happen?

  1. Earth rotates from west to east, so Arunachal Pradesh in the east of India experiences sunrise earlier than Gujarat in the west.
  2. The longitudinal extent of India is from 68°7' E to 97°25' E.
  3. There is a 30-degree longitudinal difference between the west and east of India.
  4. Earth takes 4 minutes to cover 1 degree of longitude.

  6. To address this issue, the Indian government selected a central longitude of 82°30' E, which passes through the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.
  7. People all over India follow the time based on this meridian, known as Indian Standard Time (IST).
